The trees in Brussles and Bruges (all along the train ride, actually) are pruned in several distinctive manners. This is one of them - a few main branches are allowed to grow from the trunk, but each is pruned back so its only a few feet long. The pruning also creates a club-like shape at the end of the branch. This gives the tree a very alien looking appearance.
